Using the Capital Improvement Fund, Pasadena Water and Power Department is replacing a portion of the 4kV distribution system with an underground 17kV system to provide adequate system capacity to continue to meet service demand, provide redundancy and to enhance the reliability of electrical service. All poles will remain intact and no individual service will be undergrounded.
To facilitate this electrical upgrade, PWP must extend the existing 17kV underground infrastructure on Kewen Drive to replace the existing overhead 4kV distribution system currently serving this area. This project includes only the civil portion of this upgrade: the construction of underground conduits and vaults. The electrical portion of this project will be completed later. No resident or business will be undergrounded, and no poles will be removed, as a result of this project. Should a resident be interested in undergrounding their portion of the electrical service, please contact Bonnie Hopkins at (626) 744-4147. For information about undergrounding your cable or telephone service, please contact your cable and telephone provider.
This project is part of the City's master plan to increase system reliability and is funded by PWP's Power Capital Fund for Distribution System Expansion. No Underground Surtax funds will be used to fund this project.
This project includes the undergrounding of the electrical system in Kewen Drive and Canon Drive. Perry Thomas Construction Inc. was awarded the contract by City Council on March 3, 2014.
