What is the difference in Anonymous and Confidential testing?

The actual testing procedure for Anonymous and Confidential testing are exactly the same. Both tests require an oral swab and involve pre- and post-test counseling with a California state certified counselor. The difference is in the amount of personal information an individual chooses to reveal at the clinic. An individual choosing anonymous testing is given a code number that is linked to the test results and lab slip. The person never gives any contact information, such as name, telephone number or address, and the test results cannot be linked in any way to the individual. Someone choosing confidential testing provides contact information and the test results are linked to the person’s name in a confidential medical file. California state laws protect this result from being disclosed to anyone but the client.

Here are some of the factors to consider when choosing between Anonymous and Confidential testing:

    • In a confidential setting, it is possible for the clinic and counselor to provide follow-up support, whereas with anonymous testing, no clini-initiated follow up is possible.
    • In confidential testing, clients can receive a written result with their name. Such documentation may be required by the courts or other service providers.
