Black Infant Health Program

The Pasadena Public Health Department Black Infant Health Program works to reduce health disparities experienced by African-American pregnant and parenting women, teens, families and infants.

We provide information and health education to help pregnant and parenting African-American women and teens to make positive choices in their lives for themselves, their families and their communities.

The program is conveniently located near the ARTS and MTA bus line stops.  We are next to the Pasadena Public Health Department's Prenatal Clinic, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program and an on-site health insurance enrollment and a Medi-Cal Eligibility office.  New mothers and mothers-to-be are able to make prenatal clinic appointments, get nutrition support and enroll in insurance within the same building. 

 Health Disparities:  An Unequal Balance of Health in Our Pasadena Community

• African American babies are twice as likely to be born with a low birth weight than infants of other racial or ethnic groups.   
   
• African-American babies are more than one and a half times more likely to be born prematurely than White babies. 
   
• African-American women are four times more likely to experience life threatening health complications from pregnancy than White women. 
   
• The Black Infant Health Program works with African-American pregnant women and mothers, so that babies are born healthy and well.
 

Successful Outcomes for Black Infants and Mothers

• The Black Infant Health Program has been in California and Pasadena since 1989.
• The Program is located in counties and cities where over 75% of African-American infant births and deaths occur.
• Statewide from 1997 - 2007, the Black Infant Health Program has covered almost 8% of California's African-American live births.
• Pasadena is one of thirteen Black Infant Health Programs throughout the state of California.

Patients can walk in Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 5:30 pm and Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

The Pasadena Public Health Department is closed every other Friday (please see calendar).

The Black Infant Health Program offers classes and workshops about:

• Breastfeeding
• Caring for You, Caring for Your Baby workshop
• Domestic violence prevention and resources
• How to manage stress
• Infant and toddler CPR
• Social support and empowerment

Eligibility

If you are an African-American woman in the greater Pasadena area and would like support, health education, assistance with getting insurance or other services in a fun and welcoming environment, please call us at (626) 744-6155 to get involved.  Receive a free gift for enrolling in the program.

• Pregnant African-American women and teens are eligible.
• Parenting African-American women and teens with babies who are less than 3 months old.
• No fees for Black Infant Health Program services.

A community-based Black Infant Health Advisory Committee meets quarterly at the Pasadena Public Health Department to discuss current health disparity causes and create prevention strategies.
