GRAN FONDO GIRO D’ITALIA IN PASADENA: A GREAT RIDE IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Pasadena, CA – Only few days left before the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia will kick-off in Pasadena on Sunday, June 2. More than a thousand participants are expected from all over the States and beyond to participate in the second event, which will offer a fairly urban experience and a great opportunity to ride the distance, while experiencing the full flavor of a Giro d'Italia event.

“We are very pleased to welcome the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia back to Pasadena,” said Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard. “Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success, and we expect the 2013 ride to attract even more participants. Cycling is a vital component of Pasadena’s transportation plan. Named the most bike-friendly city in LA County, Pasadena is home to 50 miles of bike routes. With the city’s passion for cycling and the spirit of Italy filling our streets, this Gran Fondo is destined to be the best yet.”

Much to see and enjoy in the three courses presented this year (25, 68 and 94 miles with a maximum of 5134 vertical gain and 7.7 % max grade): picturesque mountain views of the San Gabriel Valley and an opportunity to ride through cycling friendly towns like Claremont, Monrovia, Temple City, and some of the most remarkable natural reserves of the area. The long ride goes through the campus of Scripps and Pomona Colleges, past the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, and through charming communities in Eastern LA County. Other cities included are: Arcadia, Azusa and Glendora, La Verne and a thigh-burning climb, Claremont, Covina, San Dimas and the great regional Bonelli Park. "The Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia is the closest thing you'll find to an authentic European cycle-sportive without having to cross the Atlantic,” says former pro Neil Shirley, best timer of the previous edition. “After experiencing the Pasadena Fondo last year, it became a must-do event for 2013. Scenic terrain, well stocked rest stops, and an amazing post-ride feast are three reasons why the Pasadena event is back on my list."

After so much pedaling, Season 5 “Top Chef” contestant Alex Eusebio will serve a healthy yet delicious buffet rich in “al dente” pasta, designer Panini, and more, all complemented by fresh salads. Starting on Saturday, June 1 it will also be possible to visit the Expo, rich in cycling wear and equipment and now offering an enhanced Italian flair, with an opportunity to indulge in genuine Italian gourmet tasting, authentic espresso, Italian soda and so much more. On Saturday, in conjunction with the Make Music Pasadena festival, there will be concerts at 1, 2 and 4 pm.

“The Giro has a significant role in the sport, culture and social life of Italy,” said Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles Giuseppe Perrone. “It tells about our tradition and more than a century of history of our Country. The concept of making this experience available to an international audience, represents a great way to promote Italy. Pasadena, featuring tens of miles of bike routes, is definitely a perfect location to stage a cycling event, which is enjoying a growing success on the West Coast of the U.S.”

Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia is proud to be partnering with the Los Angeles County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, serving the local communities. Proud sponsors and partners of the event include: Bianchi bicycles, Vittoria, Selle Italia, Limar, Santini, Speedplay, Bar Cliff, Mezzacorona wines, Camelbak, Bicycling magazine, Gazzetta dello Sport and Interbike. Under the auspices of Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles and the Italian Trade Commission.
