Washington Blvd. and Central Library’s  Children’s Room, 285 E. Walnut St.

FREE Comic Book Day is an annual event held the first Saturday in May across the United States. Why then? It’s because the movie industry almost always releases a film that weekend featuring comic book characters. This year, it’s "Iron Man 3" which will be released the day. The connection between comics, movies, television and books has never been greater.

Special comic themed programs celebrating FREE Comic Book Day will also be held on May 4 at various library locations. Central Library will host Graphic artist Mike Kunkel, creator of the Grommitts, Lunchbags, Mercury, and Herobear comics from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kunkel will informally talk to kids and teens and sign books. Collector’s Paradise will also be offering comic books and comic memorabilia for sale. There will also be a special screening of superhero films and animation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central Library is located at 285 E. Walnut St.

Allendale Branch Library will host Super Black: American Pop Culture and Black Superheroes, Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. Dr. Adilifu Nama will discuss and sign copies of his book, Super Black: American Pop Culture and Black Superheroes. In this first comprehensive study of black superheroes in mainstream comics, film, and television, Nama finds new avenues for exploring racial identity.  Drawing fascinating parallels between comic characters and trends in American politics and pop culture, Nama, Associate Professor of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University, concludes that the imaginary black superhero has come to life in the form of President Barack Obama. Allendale Library is located at 1130 S. Marengo Ave.

Hastings Branch Library will host a Cartooning Workshop featuring comic creator Javier Hernandez at 2 p.m. followed by a Craft Workshop at 3 p.m. Hastings Library is located at 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd.
