The “Who, What, Why, When, and Where” of SERIAL NUMBERS
Anyone and everyone who owns a bicycle, regardless of the value!
Every bicycle owner needs to write down the serial number assigned to their bicycle. It is unique to each bicycle and by tracking it, the police department can identify the owner. Pictures are also very helpful.
Bicycles are recovered and /or “found” throughout the city, the serial number aids in tracking the bicycle and returning it to the owner.
Now! The sooner the better, write the number down and keep it with all of your other important documents. There are even on-line services to help register your bicycle!
The serial numbers are commonly found under the “crankshaft,” or where the pedals meet. In some cases the serial numbers are kept on file with the store where the bicycle was originally purchased.
Document the serial number, register the serial number, and always keep it locked up!
