I am gratified that the Pasadena Unified School District Board has decided not to close San Rafael Elementary School in Council District 6. In recent months I had spoken with PUSD officials to advocate keeping San Rafael open because I believe it is extremely important for West Pasadena to have a public school, and also because I have seen firsthand the substantial improvements that have been made by the District generally, and specifically at San Rafael Elementary, under the leadership of PUSD’s Board, Superintendent Edwin Diaz and Principal Allyson Beecher.
Last week I was at San Rafael Elementary as “Principal for a Day” in a program sponsored by the Pasadena Educational Foundation. I was extremely impressed by the students, teachers, administrators and parents with whom I met, and by the positive and progressive curriculum underway there. I look forward to continuing to work with PUSD in the years ahead to support San Rafael Elementary School and all of PUSD’s public schools so every child in Pasadena can reach his or her full potential.
